Banded Kingfisher at Khao Yai National Park

Banded Kingfisher - female

I am miles away from internet connectivity so briefly to say we bumped into a stunning male and female Banded Kingfisher in Khao Yai National Park today; they were servicing a nest and showing reasonably well. More later. I am so glad I bought that Panasonic GF 1. I'll let the photos say the rest for now.

  1. Khao Yai is sure a nice place for birding. Unfortunately, I don't have much opportunity to visit. I remember observing a pair of Banded Kingfisher at nest once many years ago at Khao Yai too. It's interesting that they were nesting in an old ant nest. Hope I get a chance to see them again.

  3. Hi Gerry. Great photos and a great blog! The name of the damselfly is Neurobasis chinensis (Linnaeus, 1758), male. It has a number of common names: Stream Glory, Oriental Greenwing, Chinese Greenwing, Green-winged Demoiselle, Green Metalwing - so take your pick! Khao Yai is a great place and I have been many times. If you ever get the chance, visit Nam Nao National Park, Petchabun. If you need any more info on dragonflies etc. email me at ifidontreplyimdead@hotmail.co.uk Dennis

  4. Thanks Dennis much appreciated. Nam Nao is on my list of places to visit. I love the dragonflies and damselflies I get to see as a result of birding, love the whole experience.

  5. Hi Gerry. No problem and keep up the fantastic blog. By the way, are the deer not Barking Deer??? I have spotted them several times at Khao Yai and thought that's what they were. Cheers, Dennis

  6. Dennis I am no expert on anything but I think Barking Deer and Muntjacs are the same thing; I can confirm the Red one did a bit of barking too! I was actually surprised to see so many animals because on my one previous visit I recall seeing some stuff in the distance but not much close up.
