And Now for Something Completely Different...

Total lunar eclipse
Ratchaburi,Thailand

Last night a total lunar eclipse was visible over most of Asia and with fine clear weather there were great views and it provided a great photo opportunity. We spotted a beautiful Barn Owl as we headed towards the local rice paddy and there was a lot of owl activity around us in part because it was night but also because the rice crop is being harvested and this throws up great food opportunities. I was looking for a silhouette shot of an owl against the eclipse!

The photographic challenge was considerable. The weight of the rig, the necessary tilt upwards of about 60⁰ combined with long exposure between 1 - 6 seconds makes it very difficult to get a sharp image: these combined factors cannot eliminate vibration. Also during the partial stage which precedes and follows the total  eclipse period, the moon is reflecting changing amounts of dark red and bright white light and it is very difficult to correctly expose this.

But what a beautiful sight, what a phenomenon and great to be able to capture it. I think next time I might try to shoot at higher iso in order to reduce shutter release times.

And then when the eclipse is total the moon goes this beautiful orange colour.
